Bats finally blow up
That’s the potent offense I was talking about! The Cubs bats tore up the Astros for 11 runs as the Astros earned five off of Ted Lilly and one off of rookie David Patton.
But seriously if our offense could own a team like that day in and day out then I smell the World Series. Fukodome shocked the hell out of me going 4-5, a homerun, 4 runs, and a stolen base! Should I expect this from each game he plays in? HELL YEAH! I believe his contract is around 40 million, so it’s about time he starts playing like it.
Ramirez and Fontenot both had 4 rbi a piece. Ramirez actually had 4 hits too and Fontenot blasted a homerun to Right Field. Fontenot is going to shock a lot of people this year, he’s a pretty small guy but he has some pop in his bat. He’ll also have plenty of opportunities to help the team out with brining runners across the plate, because he bats behind Ramirez and in front of Soto. The past few years when Fontenot’s batting it seems like all his power comes from pulling the ball, but if he wanted to he could take the ball the opposite way for a base hit.
The Cubs babied Soto last night because of a minor injury, he’s fine.
Ted Lilly worried me last night. He hasn’t been impressive over spring training, and really got shelled last night giving up five runs in five innings; four of those five runs came off of homers. I know Lilly is a fly ball pitcher and the wind was blowing out pretty hard, Pudge managed to knock one over the ballpark, but still, four homeruns in five innings is pretty scary. I could only imagine how much he’ll give up this year at Wrigley.
Besides Patton giving up a homerun to the first batter he faced the Chicago’s bullpen didn’t look that bad last night. Most likely it looked good because Cotts didn’t pitch.
What was most important was the team took the series from Houston 2-1. I know we’re not going to win them all, but if we could take each series we’ll be fine, and like I said the division is ours to lose.
First loss is always the toughest
I’m not in a very good mood. The losers lost last night in the tenth inning to apparently the godly team of the Houston Astros. Where was the Cubs potent offense I was promised? Sure Soriano hit a homerun last night, but he proved why he shouldn’t be hitting lead off, first three at bats for him last night resulted in strikeouts. You suck Soriano.
I don’t know what the senile old man was thinking last night when he forgot that we have Carlos Marmol in the pen. I don’t understand why Marmol wasn’t thrown out there last night. Screw the “awww, let him rest his arm” b.s. I don’t care if he pitched the day before or not.
By the way how the hell did Neil Cotts make the team? He sucked last year, thanks to his awfulness we lost the game. Well not just him either, but thanks to Derrick Lee too for being too afraid to break up a double play last night. Lee has to grow a set of balls. Oh yeah, you too Rameriz for trying to stretch out a single into a double and getting called out. Yeah, after Rameriz did that the next two batters reached base, could have been bases loaded with just one out. Also too Bradley for not even getting a base hit in the past two games.
Back to Marmol, I’m fuming over this one. How do you not put Marmol in after Cotts gave up the base hits in the tenth inning? Obviously if the Astros get a base hit they’ll win the game. The only person in the pen that could go out there and just shut down a team is freakin Marmol, not Gregg!!!!
Last spring training thoughts and your 2009 Chicago Cubs
Well this is my last entry until probably Sunday; I have a bachelor party to go to this weekend. Leaving straight after work tomorrow, should be a good time, especially since I’m the best man!
But back to the focus, the Cubs finish their last spring training games this Friday and Saturday as they break in Yankee Stadium. Kind of funny that a team with losing history plays the first game in the new stadium against a team with a winning tradition: the New York Yankees.
I don’t believe Friday’s game is televised in the Chicago area, and I know Saturday’s game is televised; unfortunately I won’t be able to see either one. I think Lou will play the opening day starting lineup for both Friday night and Saturday’s day game. Geovany Soto and Koyie Hill will most likely play one game a piece.
In both games I expect the Cubs to treat it as a real game and execute real situations, for example a hit and run would do, so would stolen bases, and sacrifices.
The team is almost set, the Cubs currently have 27 players on the active roster and it’ll go down to 25 most likely following Saturdays game. I think pitchers Jeff Samardzija or either David Patton or Luis Vizcaino will be sent down.

Looking at that roster it’s obvious that the Cubs are weak in the bullpen. The depth off the bench seems scarier, specifically in the infield. If Ramirez goes down for a long period of time the Cubs will be basically screwed at Third Base, and its worrying the hell out of me. Luckily Ramirez doesn’t have a history of injury problems.
