Cubs spring training game, player thoughts, and Bako cut
Cubs and Royals finished today’s game in a tie in the tenth inning at eight runs a piece.
I’m by no means a major league scout, but I’ve been watching baseball long enough to determine win a pitcher is on or off, and today my friends, Cubs starter Rich Harden was off..way off. His location was horrible today. I’ll cut the guy a break because obviously its spring training, and because I think he was working on his change up today. At least that’s what it seemed like to me. I wonder if I could look up how many pitches of each pitch a pitcher throws, something to look into.
On the plus side at least two of his homers he gave up came off of Royals third basemen Alex Gordon who’s on my fantasy team, but the negative on this one I guess is I have Harden too.
Fukodome has some issues to work out in center. Reed Johnson called for the ball, Kosuke cuts him off and tries to catch it, and then drops the freakin ball! The next inning he hit a homerun to make up for it, but still, he better think next time. Once again, luckily it was just spring training.
Oh almost forgot Milton Bradley went 4-4 today, he’ll be a HUGE up to the Cubs this year.
By the way it looks like me and Lou are on the same page once again, the Cubs cut backup catcher Paul Bako and named Koyie Hill back up catcher for this season.
Spring training game recap
Just thought I would do a real quick post of the Cubs/White Sox spring training game. I don’t normally get excited over these games, I focus much rather on each player individually as opposed to a whole team. The Cubs did most of there damage in first inning while batting around the order and scoring 7 runs, went on to win the meaningless game of 9-4.
Carlos Zambrano earned the victory going six innings, same as his last outing. He should have just one more start before his season opener at Houston, and would like to see him go 7 or 8 innings, obviously with a pitch count though.
It was good to see Kosuke Fukodome back from the World Baseball Classic, I’ll show a little optimism here and predict he’ll have a good year (I think a good year for him is having around a .400 OBP), he’s doing everything for a second time now and hopefully one year is all he needed to adjust to baseball in America.
What I dislike is the lineup Lou has been putting out, really with Derrek Lee batting number three, what worries me the most coming from Lee has been his loss of power and him leading the league last year in double plays.
Here is the lineup I would like to see:
Soriano
Fukodome
Rameriz
Bradley
Lee
Soto
Miles/Fontenot (depending on pitching matchups)
Theriot
Pitcher
It’s just a little bit different from what Lou said he’ll put out:
Soriano
Fukodome
Lee
Bradley
Rameriz
Fontenot
Soto
Theriot
Pitcher
Some other news coming from the Cubs camp is switch hitting catcher Koyie Hill might beat out veteran catcher Paul Bako for the backup catcher position. I much rather have Hill over the aging Bako, like I said he’s a switch hitter and already has some familiarity with the Cubs pitching staff, unlike Bako. Plus Hill has been performing really well at the plate this spring.
I should come up for a fun way to close my posts, maybe a fun Cub fact of the day or something along that line, feel free to offer suggestions.
